The Killers: Richard Ramirez

Murderers committed: At least 16

Richard Ramirez, despite his claims, mostly preyed on elderly women and children in lower class neighborhoods. He attacked many of his victims in their own homes.

For nearly a year the LA police refused to acknowledge the attacks were the work of a serial killer. When they finally did admit it, the press dubbed Ramirez "The Night Stalker."

On August 24, Ramirez broke into yet another home and shot Bill Carns, age 29, three times in the head. He then raped Inez Erickson (Carns' fiancée) twice telling her: "You know who I am, don't you? I'm the one they're writing about in the newspapers and on TV."

The media attention became a point of pride for Ramirez.

Eventually, police were able to identify Ramirez by a partial fingerprint. His mug shot was shown on national TV. The next day Ramirez's picture was on the cover of every newspaper in the state.

Ramirez had no clue any of this was going on until he walked into a liquor store and saw his photo on the front page of the newspaper. He panicked, and soon the other customers in the store realized that he was the "Night Stalker." Ramirez darted out the door and decided to steal a car. Unfortunately for him, he chose an extremely bad neighborhood for his escape.

He had to be "rescued" by the police as he was violently attacked and beaten in the middle of the street by local residents.

Ramirez is currently incarcerated at San Quentin on Death Row.

One of the women who stood by Ramirez during his trial and afterwards was Doreen Lioy, who works as an editor for various magazines. She fell in love with Ramirez and wanted to protect him from "unfair" treatment. They were married on October 3, 1996.
